TissueGen was born in 2000 following founder Dr. Kevin Nelson’s research with Dr. George Smith at UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. Working in peripheral nerve regeneration, their research showed fascicle formation in regenerated nerves with the aid of fibers and convinced the team of the commercial viability of its fiber-based drug delivery technology.
The peripheral nerve regeneration work was the culmination of a long line of extremely successful experiments that demonstrated the use of drug delivery fibers in numerous applications. With Dr. Nadir Alikacem, for example, the TissueGen team demonstrated the ability to load a small pharmaceutical agent onto a fiber to help stem the blindness that results from diabetes.
Thanks to a multitude of additional R&D efforts, TissueGen has brought the scientific breakthrough of implantable drug delivery via biodegradable fibers to commercial reality.
